Indians, after the Supreme Court gave its verdict on LGBT community, felt that justice had finally been given to them, but it seems much needs to be done in this regard, and the verdict is just the tip of the ice-burg; as India-aware found on getting this article from one of its contributor Subhashree who alleged that the Kolkata police had insulted a man for his sexual orientation.
We all know Kolkata aka Tilottama is famous for its own ritual irrespective of religion, caste, class. But some incidents make us feel ashamed and are forced to question where are we living? How are we living?
Yes exactly these questions come on my mind when I came to know about an immoral policing on with Obhishek kar, a writer, activist and a student of Human Rights and Human Development of Rabindra Bharati University.
He updated a social status on 8th October about his bad experience. On 8th he was going to Nandan, a cultural activity hub of Kolkata, to collect his purse which he had lost.
He was crossing Park Street, a bullet with three police personnel had stopped him assaulted and harassed him. They insulted him for his gender identity which was scary and the same incident was repeated when he went to the Maidan police station, Kolkata, for lodging a general diary about the above.
This is what Obhishek kar said in a video posted on his social media site.

After leaving the police station, he was called again to meet an officer. Once again he was harassed by the same police personnel inside the police station.
Repeatedly these police were slamming him over his sexual orientation. Their attitude was like—‘we know what you (as he supports LGBT movement) people do in isolated and dark lane of the city.’
After that he was again called by police and this time the police personnel apologized to him. But Obhishek wants his legal punishment in the form of suspension because this is against the law and shouldn’t have happened with any citizen in India.
He complained about all the incidents and trying to take legal help to punish the officers. He might have to fight a little because this fight isn’t against a general citizen.
This incident raises questions, are we safe at all? Where is the public security take the charge of harassing citizens?
Few days ago Supreme Court declared the verdict about homosexuality and it’s clear that all Indians are free to live with their own sexual orientation. Still Obhishek faced such humiliation.
Such incidents are happening again and again. Some incidents get revealed but maximum remain behind the curtains. The question goes around the mind, can we change the mentality of the society by verdict only?
His few words– ‘It’s is our right to move freely in India, expect emergency period. Nobody can ask us to not move around in any street without legal notice. If anybody ask such it should be gentle not abusing or nobody can attack. Mocking with gender identity shouldn’t be happened. And how can a police personnel did such when they are here to give us security. And if it’s happened, you are bound to get punishment and that is form of suspension”
Note: India-aware does not stand for the authenticity of the incident reported in this article, it only carried the article as voice over a social issue and on humanitarian grounds only.
