The Kiwis made a very good comeback and levelled the 3 match T20 International series to 1-1.
New Zealand batted very well, first they won the toss and opted to bat first in their must win game.
The openers who failed to give a good start in the ODI series and in the 1st T20 International, finally fired to seal the match in their team’s favour.
Martin Guptill and Colin Munro did what Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma did to them in Delhi few days ago.
The Kiwi Openers gave a blazing start to their innings. They added 105 runs in just 11.1 overs.
Martin Guptill had a very tough tour, but yesterday he put those things behind. He scored a gusty 45 runs from 41 balls. But he couldn’t go a long way.
Yuzvendra Chahal gave India a much needed breakthrough with the in form of Martin Guptill.
Later India’s debutant Mohd Siraj picked up his first International wicket. Kane Williamson was out for 12 runs, by doing so the Kiwi captain gave Siraj his first T20 International wicket.
But Colin Munro was still there going on strong. It was impossible for the Indian bowlers to stop him.
The bowling attack which shined on Wednesday at Delhi, failed to keep that form going in Rajkot yesterday.
Colin Munro smashed his 2nd T20 International hundred. He also got some help from the Indian fielders. His 109 of just 58 balls took New Zealand to a good score at the end of their allotted 20 overs.
Munro also got the help of Tom Bruce; he was also unbeaten on 18 runs with the Centurion Munro.
Munro jointed the list of the players who have 2 T20 International hundreds. Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis and Brendon Mccullum are the players who feature in this list.
It was a mere struggle for the Indian bowlers, they bowled well on Wednesday but failed to restrict the Kiwis this time around. Japrit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Axar Patel went for plenty. Only Yuzvendra Chahal and debutant Mohd Siraj took 1 wicket to their name.
India also bowled 12 extras, which hurt them. Axar Patel himself bowled 5 wides in that innings.
Chasing 196 to win the series, Indian openers failed to repeat their mater class innings like Delhi.
This time they were out cheaply, Shikhar Dhawan was clean bowled by Boult for just 1 and his partner Rohit Sharma was caught by Glenn Philips for just 5 runs.
India lost 2 quick wickets for just 11 runs on the board then Shreyas Iyer and Skipper Virat Kohli tried to bring the Indian innings on track.
The duo shared a small partnership of 54 runs but that wasn’t enough for India to win the game from that position.
This partnership was ended when Shreyas gave a simple return catch to Munro, Iyer was dismissed for 23 runs.
Hardik Pandya had a very bad day at the office; with the ball he couldn’t pick up any wickets and he didn’t score runs either. Kohli promoted Pandya again but Pandya disappoints again by scoring just a single run.
Skipper Kohli again played a rescue act, this time with former captain MS Dhoni. MSD and Kohli shared another 56 run stand to get closer to the target.
In this process Kohli scored his 18th T20 fifty, its the most by any one. He also hit 200 boundaries, which is the most after Tilakratne Dilshan.
Kohli and MSD were going on well but the New Zealand bowlers were better on that day.
They broke this partnership when Kohli was out to Mitchell Santner for 65 runs.
The Kiwis were back in the contest after that huge wicket of Kohli. Now it was all up to MS Dhoni to take India home. But Axar Patel was gone after hitting a four, Trent Boult picked up his wicket for 5 runs.
Later Trent Boult got the price wicket of MS Dhoni for 49 runs and Bhuvneshwar Kumar was with Jasprit Bumrah to remain unbeaten in end. India managed to score 156 runs for the loss of 7 wickets.
New Zealand won the match by 40 runs and levelled the series to 1 all.
This is India’s 3rd heaviest loss in term of runs and this is the second time that India has lost by more than 40 runs to New Zealand.
Trent Boult was the picked of the bowlers for the Kiwis. He picked up 4 wickets. Mitchell Santner, Colin Munro and Ish Sodi picked 1 wicket each.
Colin Munro’s 109 not out and Trent Boult’s 4 wickets for 34 runs became just the 3rd pair overall and 1st pair for New Zealand to score a hundred and pick up a 4 wicket haul in the same T20 match.
Man of the match was awarded to Colin Munro for his 109 not out and he also picked the wicket of Shreyas Iyer.
Next T20 match is on Tuesday 07th November 2017 at Green-feild International Stadium in Thiruvanantpuram
