- England- 287 & 180/10
- India- 274 & 162/10
England won the first match of the five match test series against India and now lead the series 1-0 lead.
Indian batsmen couldn’t reach the target of 194 runs, and lost the match by 31 runs. It’s now the must win game in the 2nd test beginning from Aug 9-13 before India’s Independence day.
In the match, bowlers did their job but none of the batsmen except Virat gave any support. At the end, Pandya (31) tried to make it but he was the last brick in the wall, picked up by Ben Stokes. Though the match ended up in just three and half days, it showed loads of drama. The Edgbaston wicket was like heaven to the bowlers. But balls were also coming to the bat nicely.
The only thing that was required was batting partnership. At the starting of the 4th day, both the batsmen VK & DK were sent back early by the English bowlers. Though Kohli managed to hit the half century (51), it was Dinesh Karthik (20) who struggled in both the innings. Stokes was the highest wicket taker (4) in the second innings for the English, whereas Anderson and Broad took 2 each.
Now the Indian think tank must sit with the batsmen and analyse with the recording of the match. Also they must think about team combination. Pujara’s absence was clear in the middle order. Also the opening pair is still the concern for the Indian Captain.
Though there are more four matches to be played, but India should start planning from now. If the batting woes continue, it could be 5-0 win for England.
