England overcome the jinx of losing in penalty shoot and goes through to quarter finals in FIFA World Cup Russia 2018; will have to beat Sweden to reach the semi.
It has become something of a theme or a probable curse–1990, 1996, 1998, 2004, 2006 and 2012, six major tournaments in 22 years, England brimming with high hopes and big name players, but bowing out in the worst possible way.
But this a new England side, and they say it is a team of young players, lead by Harry Kane, with smiles on their faces and a spring in their step and the belief that it does not always have to be the way it has always been.
Tuesday night was perhaps the beginning of a new era for British football, as England beat Columbia by 4-3 goals on penalty shootout and is now through to the quarter final.
This is the new era, because England never won a match that went on to penalty shootout in big tournaments. The score at the end of the game read 1-1, which continued to the extra 30 minutes. But still the scores remained unchanged.
England overcoming the jinx, won the game. Team captain Kane said, “There is been a lot about this being a young team. We have grown up a lot out there, especially on the pitch tonight.”
The result of the match came so quickly, first a miss, then a make, and was in many ways so unexpected given England’s history that its player did not seem to know what to do. A British supporter surprisingly tweeted: the moment clinched their spot in the quarter and won their first penalty shoot out.
In another match on Tuesday Sweden beat Switzerland by 1-0 goal and secured a position in the quarters. In the 66th minute Swedish player Emil Forsberg scored the goal and took his team to the last 8.
“In quarterfinal Sweden play against England, and we hope the two Europe giant will entertain the football lover,’ said experts.
