In the must win game to level the series, India stopped England at 246 on Day 1 of the fourth test at Southampton. Like the last match, Jasprit Bumrah led the bowling attack taking 3 wickets of Bairstow, Jennings and Stuart Broad. Sami, Ishant and Ashwin also took 2 each and 1 wicket for Pandya.
Bumrah started the bowling for India and his unplayable delivery in the 3rd over sent back Jennings to the pavilion. It was an ins winger and Jennings tried to leave the ball thinking it’s going out. In the 5th over, English Captain Joe Root also got into Bumrah’s trap in similar fashion but Root was so lucky when third umpire declared it as ‘no ball’. Though the dangerous Root was sent back to pavilion by Ishant soon.
On Thursday, England won the toss and decided to bat first as expected. But before 50, they lost their 4 wickets and within 100, it was 6 down. Sam Curran (78) and Moeen Ali (40) built a superb partnership of 81. But Ravi Ashwin broke the partnership and brought India again into the match. After this duo, it was just a matter of time when England batting was to be collapsed. Curran again proved his importance in the team. At the end of the day’s play, India was on 19 for no loss and Shikhar Dhawan and Lokesh Rahul on the crease. Now it would be very much interesting to see how much lead the Indian batsmen can take in their first innings.
