India and West Indies will take on each other to play the 1st ODI at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain and Trinidad tomorrow.
India will look to bounce back after a shocking defeat to Pakistan at the ICC Champions Trophy final on Sunday.
India was sloppy against Pakistan in that match. Their bowling and batting lack the firepower and their fielding too was not great.
Indian bowlers will need to set up in this game; it was only Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hardik Pandya who bowled some excellent spells. But rest struggled to pick wickets against Pakistani batsmen.
Indian batsmen also couldn’t contribute to the task. Chasing a mammoth target of 339 the batsmen just managed to get 154 runs in the end. The pace bowlers of Pakistan used the swinging conditions to good effect.
Now on this tour to the Windies, India will have to place the defeat behind them.
Captain Kohli and Dhawan have a huge responsibility in absence of Rohit Sharma. There might be the possibility of Rishabh Pant making his way in the team.
India has some big concerns ahead of this 1st ODI match. Head coach Kumble’s absence is huge blow for the Indian team and the form of MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh and Ravichandran Ashwin is also a worry,
Ashwin was hammered all over the park by Pakistani batsmen in that final. Against a minnows team like Bangladesh too Ashwin leaked runs. Kuldeep Yadav may replace Ashwin for few games because Ashwin’s form in test matches is crucial for India. After this tour India will travel to Sri Lanka for 3 test matches, 5 ODIs and 1 T20.
For West Indies they had a good time against Afghanistan in the 3 match T20 series. The Windies won that series 3-0. But their ODI form is not too great. England and Pakistan defeated West Indies heavily at their home.
In absence of big players like Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Kieron Pollard and mystery spinner Sunil Narine the younger players have big shoes to fill and deliver for their country.
Captain Jason Holder will hold the key for West Indies in this ODI. Devendra Bishoo will have to do what Sunil Narine did for the West Indies team. It can be difficult for the hosts to put a good fight against number 3 ranked but West Indies have young talented players and will know that’s not an impossible task. So the Windies should play their own positive brand of cricket.
India should not make mistake to take West Indies lightly at their own backyard.
According to the stats India doesn’t have good ODI record against West Indies. From 116 ODI matches played so far India has won just 53 of them and West Indies have won 60. 1 match ended in a tie and 2 matches were in no result state.
India has a golden opportunity to improve their ODI record against West Indies. The Indian team should aim to win this series 5-0.
At home West Indies are a dangerous side to beat. Form 31 matches played till India’s last tour in 2013, Windies have won 19 of them and India has managed to win just 11 ODI games.
India comfortably won the ODI series in West Indies when they came in 2013. The Celkon cup was a tri series played in 2013; this series involved India, West Indies and Sri Lanka. Despite losing to Sri Lanka and West Indies once in that series, India bounced back well to win the Celkon cup in 2013.
That was under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, now under Kohli India will hope to beat the West Indies in a bigger margin. Kohli and co will be looking to place some recent controversies behind them and take the series 5-0.
