Will the hosts, Sri Lanka fight back in the 2nd One Day International at Pallekele?
This is the biggest question that the Sri Lankans fans are thinking before the 2nd One Day International match at Pallekele International Stadium on Thursday 24th August 2017.
Nothing has seemed to go right for the Sri Lankan team. Their hammering loss at Dambulla will dent their confidence more as Sri Lanka are yet to win a game in this series. After losing the tests 3-0, the poor Lankans faced a huge loss by the hands of Kohli and co on Sunday.
Sri Lanka needs to put fight into their performance if they want to win the 2nd ODI. For that their new captain Upul Tharanga needs to find some form. Tharanga had a poor run in test matches and in the 1st ODI too he failed to score big.
Niroshan Dickwella is the only Sri Lankan who has looked good against the Indian bowlers. He got Sri Lanka to a good start in the 1st ODI. His 65 run knock was good in the context of the game but he needs to convert that good start and help his team to be in a stronger position. He failed to do it on Sunday, can he be able to do it on Thursday?
Except for Kapugedara and captain Tharanga all the Sri Lankan batsmen got good starts but failed to convert those. That’s what caused the downfall of the Sri Lankan team on Sunday.
Players like Gunthalika, Kusal Mendis, and Angelo Mathews are the key players for Sri Lanka. They need to convert their starts into a big hundred this will surely help them to post a huge total on the board.
Sri Lanka was cursing along nicely at one stage in the 1st ODI but, the wickets of set batsmen like Niroshan Dickwella, his partner Gunthalika and Kusal Mendis saw the momentum shift in India’s favor.
Sri Lanka’s batsmen need to capitalize on the good start that should be their mantra for the 2nd One Day International on Thursday.
Bowling is also a big concern for Sri Lanka; their weak bowling is adding insult to their injury. The form of their premier bowler Lasith Malinga is also a worry. Sri Lanka should find an alternative if Malinga is not performing. Malinga is a champion bowler and he can make a good comeback but in order to win matches, Sri Lanka needs to find some other resource.
Youngsters like Suranga Lakmal, Vishwa Fernando, Pushapakumara and Lakshan Sandakan should step up deliver for their team.
The Spin attack of Sri Lanka hasn’t been threatening either. Their spinners have been expensive and haven’t managed to outsmart the wristy Indian players.
Sri Lanka is badly missing out on the service of Rangana Herath. Herath plays only the longest format and has retired from ODIs and T20s.
On the other hand, India will look to continue their winning ways in this 2nd ODI. Kohli and co will want another clean sweep against the poor Sri Lankan side.
Virat Kohli hinted to experiment with a squad for the 2019 world cup, his gamble of playing Axar Patel in place of Kuldeep Yadav paid off and now Kohli might be thinking picking Shardul Thakur.
Shardul Thakur is a young prospect and an exciting talent with the ball. Shardul is a medium pacer; he has played for Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Shardul may make his ODI debut in place of Bhuvneshwar Kumar on Thursday.
Batting, bowling, and fielding looks fine for India. Their only concern is that Rohit Sharma the Vice Captain of India should score runs. He didn’t get a chance to play test matches and now he shouldn’t waste his opportunity to open the innings in ODIs. Rohit played well in the Champions Trophy, in the 1st ODI his casual running cost him his wicket. If Rohit fires then Sri Lanka now that another double century might be on the way.
Likely Playing XI for Sri Lanka –
It was very wrong to drop a player like Dinesh Chandimal from the squad in the 1st ODI. If Chandimal plays then Sri Lanka can bat deep.
Dinesh Chandimal, Upul Tharanga (c), Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Lahiru Thirimanne, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Dilruwan Perera, Vishwa Fernando, Malinda Pushpakumara and Lasith Malinga.
Likely Playing XI for India –
Shardul Thakur may make his debut. Bhuvneshwar Kumar might make his way for this youngster.
Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Kohli (C), MS Dhoni, Kedar Jhadav/KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar/Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal and Jasprit Bumrah
India again might have upper hand in this second ODI. The match will start on 14-30 IST and 09-00 GMT. The live telecast of this match will be on Sony Pix Networks.
