It was a comprehensive win for India in the last test match at Pallekle, the Indian batsmen and the bowlers dominated in this 3rd test match too.
Poor Sri Lankans had no answers to the dominance of the number 1 test team, their miserable performance in the last test of the series allowed India to win this test match in just 3 days.
Like the first two test Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper won the toss and chose to bat first.
India went with one change in their playing eleven. Due to the ban on Ravindra Jadeja by ICC; Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav got his chance to face the Sri Lankans looking to make a revival to salvage some pride.
Indian openers Dhawan and KL Rahul started off brilliantly, their 188 run stand for the opening wicket set the tone for the Indians in the first innings.
KL Rahul scored his 7th consecutive fifty of his test career. He got out after scoring 85 runs. He again missed a chance of scoring a well deserved hundred.
At the other end, ShiKhar Dhawan batted in his characteristic blistering style. Dhawan scored another hundred, his 2nd of the series and 6th overall. He was looking good for another big one but unfortunately he was dismissed for 115. Dhawan ended his series at the top scorer with 358 runs at a average of 89.50.
After Dhawan’s dismissal Pujara, the man who scored centuries in the 1st and the 2nd test was also dismissed early. He managed to score only 8 runs.
Kohli came to the crease and tried to hold the Indian innings with his gusty 42 with his partner Ajinkya Rahane.
Rahane got to 17 but couldn’t carry on and then the wicket of Kohli brought smiles all around for the Sri Lankans.
The Sri Lankans also managed to get Ashwin at the end of the first day’s play.
India was in unfamiliar terrain as they were finally put under some real pressure at 329 for the loss of 6 wickets.
At the start of day 2 India got another blow in form of Saha, he managed only 16 runs.
Shami too couldn’t hang around with Pandya. He aggressiveness cost him his wicket. He was dismissed for just 8 runs.
Sri Lanka might have thought they were back in the game and will dismiss India for under 400. They were however unprepared for the typhoon called Hardik Pandya who unleashed the fastest test century by a Indian.
Pandya shared 56 run partnership with Kuldeep Yadav and 64 run partnership with Umesh Yadav to ensure that India posted the total well in excess of 400 runs in their 1st innings.
Hardik Pandya made his full use of his batting opportunity breaking several batting records along the way. He scored his maiden test match hundred and also scored the fastest hundred by a Indian in just 86 balls. Pandya hit Pushpakumara for 26 runs in one over the most by any Indian batsman in tests. He became just the 3rd Indian to hit 3 sixes on the trot, Pandya joint former Indian Skippers in that list. Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni are the only Indian players to achieve this feat.
Hardik was the last man to be dismissed for a well- made 108 runs. Due to his onslaught India managed to score 487 in their 1st innings.
In the absence of their premiere bowlers, Rangana Herath and Nuwan Pradeep, Sri Lankan bowlers made a good comeback after a brilliant opening stand of 188 runs by the Indian openers.
Lakshan Sandakan was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers. He picked up 5 wickets for 132 runs in 35.3 overs.
Vishwa Fernando and Pushpakumara supported Sandakan well. Fernando picked up 3 wickets and Pushpakumara picked up 2 wickets each.
The batting woes continued in this last test too for the Sri Lankans. Mohd Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav ran through the poor Sri Lankan batting order.
Ashwin and Shami picked up 2 wickets each, Hardik picked up 1 wicket, but the star for India with the ball was Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav. He picked up 4 wickets and conceded only 40 runs from his 13 overs.
Due to this Sri Lanka was bundled out for just 135 runs in their 1st innings.
Virat Kohli again enforced the follow like in the Colombo test, but this time around there was no fight back from the Sri Lankans.
Indian bowlers again were on the top, they dismissed the Lankans for just 181 runs in their 2nd innings.
Despite good getting starts in the both the innings Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal couldn’t lead his team from the front, going out cheaply on both counts.
A lot was expected from Angelo Mathews and Niroshan Dickwella but they failed to put a fight in front of a attacking and well meshed Indian bowling attack.
It took only three bowlers to rattle the Sri Lankan batsmen, Ravichandran Ashwin took 4 wickets, Shami took 3, Umesh Yadav took 2 and Kuldeep Yadav took 1 wicket each. Ashwin yet again ended up as the top wicket taker at 17 wickets in the series.
Due to some great batting performance, awesome bowling display and good support in the field India won the 3rd test match by an innings and 171 runs.
Hardik Pandya was named man of the match for his good knock of 108 runs and Shikhar Dhawan was named the man of the series for scoring most number of runs in the series.
