It’s more misery for the Sri Lankan team after losing the test series 3-0 at home, they now have lost the 1st One Day International by 9 wickets at Dambulla yesterday.
It was a good comeback from Kohli and Co to seal the 1st ODI. The Indians bowlers set up this big win for team India.
India won the toss and chose to bowl first. India went with a suprise change in their playing XI. Axar Patel was brought in for Kuldeep Yadav.
Sri Lanka started off well, their openers Niroshan Dickwella and Gunathalika gave a good opening start of 74 in 13.6 overs. Things were looking good for the hosts but just then Gunathalika was dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal for 35 runs.
Dickwella was well set and going strong at the other end. He and his new partner Kusal Mendis got together to capitalise on the good start.
Dickwella and Mendis shared a stand of 65 runs for the 2nd wicket. Indian bowlers were under pressure and Kohli handed the ball to his most faithful bowler. He has broken many dangerous partnerships like these in the past and yesterday too he didn’t disappoint his skipper Kohli. Kedar Jhadav’s magical delivery caught well set Dickwella plumb in front. Jhadav dismissed Dickwella for a well made 65.
Then the Indian bowlers took an advantage and made sure that no more Sri Lankan batsmen would trouble them.
Later Kusal Mendis too was out early for 36 runs. He didn’t repeat his Champions Trophy heroics. Mendis also played an important role in that big win against the same opposition at England’s Kennington Oval.
Sri Lanka’s new ODI captain was expected to show some fireworks but his poor form continued in this 1st ODI too. Unfortunately Tharanga managed only 13 runs.
It was only Angelo Mathews who survived the Indian bowlers at the other end. No other Sri Lankan batsmen got to double figures, expected for Angelo Mathews‘s 36 not out. The lower middle order of Sri Lanka failed to add runs just like the test series.
Indian bowlers were successful in picking wickets at regular intervals. This allowed the Indians to rattle Sri Lanka for just 216 in 43.2 overs.
Again Indian bowlers just did a great job, they continued from where they left in the test matches. Comeback man Axar Patel was brilliant, so as Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah and the man with golden arm, Kedar Jhadav.
Axar picked up 3 wickets and Bumrah, Chahal and Jhadav picked up 2 wickets each.
The chase of 216 runs was seemed to be an easy one, especially with the form the Indian openers were in.
But Rohit Sharma’s run out caused some panic in the dressing room. Then it was only Dhawan and Kohli show for the Indian team. These two batsmen stole everything from Sri Lanka and gave a fantastic victory to India.
The Dhawan – Kohli added 197 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Dhawan registered his 11th ODI hundred while playing his blinder of a knock of 132 not out. Skipper Virat Kohli to provided a good support to Dhawan. Kohli scored 82 not out and saw India winning this 1st ODI match by 9 wickets.
India registered their biggest win in term of balls to spare and this was the biggest loss for Sri Lanka.
The partnership of 197 not out between Dhawan and Kohli is the highest stand in Sri Lanka.
Dhawan’s 132 not out is the highest score in run chase by the Indian batsmen in ODIs in Sri Lanka.
Shikhar Dhawan was also awarded the man of the match for his splendid effort.
Next Match – On 24th August 2017 at Pallekele International Stadium, Pallekele.
