Rohit and Co go 1-0 up in the series, India registered a massive win at Baramati Stadium.
Rohit Sharma had a bad start to his captaincy in ODIs but in this familiar format Hit Man was on top of the Sri Lankans. He didn’t allow the Lankans to pressurise him as they did in the 1st ODI at Dharamsala.
Even though India loss the toss and batted first, the openers played well and gave the team a brisk start to their innings.
Shikhar Dhawan was replaced by KL Rahul and Jaydev Unadkat made his international debut in replace of Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
KL Rahul used his opportunity well, at the start when Skipper Rohit Sharma was going on strong he held his nerve and provided the right support at the other end.
The Indian openers put on 38 runs in 4 overs, this partnership was looking dangerous as Rohit and Rahul were on song.
But the Lankans made good comeback, the senior most member of the team provided them with an important blow. Angelo Mathews was the one to give India a huge blow. Mathews picks up Rohit for 17 runs.
Rohit couldn’t go a long way but he became the 2nd highest run getter in T20 Internationals. Rohit is only behind Virat with most T20 runs. Rohit completed his 1500 runs yesterday.
The next batsman was Shreyas Iyer, he continued his good form from the ODIs. But he couldn’t go a long way. He scored 24 runs, he was out to Nuwan Pradeep.
KL Rahul seized this opportunity with both hands, he was there for India to control the innings. He was the batsman who was willing to stay while others just wanted to score runs quickly. That was the main reason why the Indian batsmen got out after getting starts.
Manish Pandey and KL Rahul held the Indians innings together, KL also recorded his 2nd T20 International fifty. He played a very good hand and scored 61 runs. He was clean bowled by Sri Lankan captain Thisara.
Then it was only about MS Dhoni, the finisher. It was MSD’s fireworks that allowed India to post a total above 170 runs.
At one stage, when KL Rahul was out India was struggling for quick runs. But MS Dhoni and Manish Pandey batted very sensibly. They were not in hurry at the start. they took their time.
They knew when to score by big shots and when to pick up quick runs. They had good match awareness thats what helped them to pile on the runs in last few overs.
Dhoni and Pandey shared an unbeaten partnership of 68 runs, both the batsmen played their full range of shots and the Sri Lankans couldn’t stop these two.
Dhoni batted at number 4, that’s where he scored his maiden T20 fifty against England at Bengaluru earlier this year. He scored 39 of just 22 balls; this knock gave India a good total to defend.
Manish Pandey also supported MS Dhoni well, his innings of 32 runs from 18 balls was also good in context of the game.
India finish on a high, the last ball six from MSD was the shot of the day. India scored 180 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in their 20 overs.
The visitors had picked up wickets at regular intervals but they couldn’t stop Dhoni and Manish Pandey. Every one struggled and went for plenty of runs. Skipper Thiasra Perera, Angelo Mahews and Nuwan Pradeep were the only wicket takers for Sri Lanka.
Chase wasn’t a great one, they needed a good start but that also didn’t happen for Sri Lanka.
Only 4 of their batsmen went on to score in double figures, Yuzvendra Chahal single handedly crushed the poor Sri Lankans.
Chahal picked up 4 wickets and picked up the wickets of important batsmen like Tharanga, Mathews, Gunaratne and skipper Thisara Perera.
Rest of their batsmen were out to Kulddep, Unadkat and Hardik Pandya. For the first time Jasprit Bumrah was wicket less in a T20 match.
Bowlers did a great job, with Chahal’s 4 wickets, Hardik Pandya also chipped in with 3, Kuldeep picked up 2 and debutant Unadkat picked up his maiden international wicket. He dismissed Niroshan Dickwella for just 13 runs.
Indian bowlers bundle out the Sri Lankans for just 87 runs. Sri Lanka didn’t even play their full quota of 20 overs. Chahal and Co bowled out Sri Lanka in just 16 overs.
India won this game by a massive margin of 93 runs. This win is the biggest for India by the terms of runs and Sri lanka faced their 6th consecutive loss in T20 Internationals.
87 runs is the second lowest total scored by Sri Lanka, their 1st lowest score also against India, they did that at Vizag in 2016. Sri Lanka was bowled out for just 82 runs.
Yuzvendra Chahal was the man of the match for his mind blowing spell of 4 wickets for just 23 runs. He became just a second Indian to pick up 4 wicket haul in T20 twice.
