The 3rd One Day International of the 5 match ODI series between India and the hosts Sri Lanka will be played on Sunday 27th August 2017 at Pallekele International Stadium.
India will want to seal the series and continue their dominance over Sri Lanka on this tour. After a hard fought win on Thursday, Virat and co will aim to correct their mistakes which they did in the 2nd ODI.
Batting experiment back fired against Virat Kohli on Thursday night. KL Rahul and Kedar Jhadav couldn’t use the opportunity to score big when they were promoted up the batting order.
Virat also failed to deliver lower down the order and Hardik Pandya’s over aggressiveness cost him his wicket.
Some calmness was needed in that panic situation and that’s when former captain cool MS Dhoni and his partner Bhuvneshwar Kumar provided them. It was their calmness which helped India to win the 2nd ODI in a thrilling way.
The visitors have a good bowling attack, even though Bhuneshwar Kumar hasn’t picked up any wickets so far in the series, he is class bowler and a good reader of the game. As Bhuvi shined with the bat on 2nd ODI, Kohli would be hoping that Bhuvneshwar Kumar would shine with the white ball on Sunday.
Openers are also in terrific form; Shikhar Dhawan is having a wonderful tour. He is continuing his Champions Trophy form on this tour as well.
Rohit Sharma found his lost touch. Rohit and Dhawan gave India a flying start in the previous match.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni is just 1 stumping away from creating a world record. Dhoni has 99 stumping to his name till now. He has equalled that record with Kumara Sangakkara. If Dhoni can affect one more stumping then he will be the only wicket keeper to have 100 stumpings in international cricket.
On Thursday it was Dhoni’s master class innings that saved India from defeat. His patient knock of 45 not out allowed India to take a 2-0 lead in this 5 match ODI series.
Dhoni now has most of not outs in One Day International cricket. MS has 120 not out, that’s the most by any player. He overtook Sri Lanka’s legendary spinner Murlidharan. He had 119 not outs in his international career, which is the second most in the history of the game.
Same stadium, same pitch and the same opposition will it make any difference for the home team on Sunday?
Sri Lanka would be aiming to make a good come back in this match. They fought hard in the last one but it wasn’t enough to win the game for the hosts.
Their batting still looks the more serious problem. Apart from their wicket keeper batsman Niroshan Dickwella no other batsmen is performing from them.
Upul Tharanga, the skipper should fire now. His poor run in this series have hurt Sri Lanka a lot. His form will be crucial for the hosts if they want to win the 3rd ODI.
Senior players like Angelo Mathews and Charmara Kapugethera should lead as examples to the youngsters. Mathews and Kapugethera have not been performing consistently. They need step up their game otherwise they will lose another ODI series.
Sri Lanka should include Dinesh Chandimal in their playing XI, the Lankans are already missing the services of Asela Gunaratne, by dropping a player like Chandimal will add more woes to the Sri Lankan team.
Dinesh Chandimal is a class player in the 50 over format too. He has a good record against India in all the 3 formats. He is the key player and the player that Sri Lanka should turn to in this type of situations.
Form of Lasith Malinga is still a concern for Sri Lanka. Malinga was again expensive in the 2nd ODI. He needs to step up his performance because his team needs him badly.
One positive that Sri Lanka should work with is their last match hero Akila Dananjaya. He was instrumental in that Indian batting collapse. His 6 wickets almost stole the show for Sri Lanka.
On the same pitch he will be lethal again, India can’t take Dananjaya lightly.
Another concern for Sri Lanka is their lower order which hasn’t been performing. Siriwarnde played well for 58 runs but after him there is no batsmen who could score runs and save their wickets.
Sri Lanka still needs 2 more wins to directly qualify for the world cup 2019. Will they get it? For that they need to perform better than the 2nd ODI on Sunday.
Playing XI for India –
Still no signs of Shardul Thakur in the playing XI and there is also a big question that is arising from the fans Why Kuldeep Yadav is warming the bench? After being successful in tests Kuldeep Yadav should have given a go in ODIs too. But Kohli is more keen to have Axar Patel in the squad.
India may not change their playing XI. But one may again see the changes in the batting order like the pervious match.
Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Kohli (C), KL Rahul, MS Dhoni, Kedar Jhadav, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav/Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal and Jasprit Bumrah
Playing XI of Sri Lanka –
Chandimal’s Inclusion may sort the batting woes for Sri Lanka. He is the best player to bat at number 4 position. His inclusion will also make the Sri Lankan batting line up more deep.
Upul Tharanga (c), Angelo Mathews, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Danushka Gunathilaka/Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Mendis, Chamara Kapugedera, Milinda Siriwardana, Malinda Pushpakumara, Akila Dananjaya, Lasith Malinga, Dushmantha Chameera.
