After losing 5 consecutive T20 International matches against New Zealand, Team India finally won their first T20 International against them.
This win by India was a fitting farewell to Indian Veteran pacer Ashish Nehra. Nehraji played his last International game in front of his home crowd.
In the first match of the T20 series, New Zealand won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Things went according to the plan, as the Indian openers started off well. Dhawan and Rohit gave India what was needed at the start of the innings.
Their partnership was the key for India and they didn’t disappoint this time around.
Even though Dhawan got a life when he was on the score of 8, but his intent was there that’s why he and Rohit could build a partnership of 158 for the opening wicket.
This partnership of 158 run partnership is the highest for India in T20 Internationals.
Shikhar Dhawan rose the occasion, he was playing on his home ground. He struck beautiful 80 runs. This 80 runs is the highest score of Shikhar Dhawan in T20 Internationals.
Rohit Sharma also batted well at the other end but missed out on his 2nd T20 century.
The highest stand of 158 lasted for 16.2 overs, Ish Sodhi made a brilliant comeback after being out of the One Day series. He broke this highest partnership and gave an important breakthrough to the Kiwis.
Shikhar Dhawan was the first one to go after scoring his 80 runs. India wanted some quick runs so they decided to promote Hardik Pandya instead of Skipper Kohli and MS Dhoni.
Unfortunately, Hardik was out without troubling the scorers. Ish Sodi gets two wickets in 1 over.
After a good start, India wanted to score big. But Trent Boult struck again as Hit Man goes after scoring 80 runs.
MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli took India to a defendable total of 202 for the loss of 3 wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
The Delhi crowd were up to their feet when Dhoni hit his first ball for six. This crowd was thoroughly entertained by the Indian batsmen.
But it was a sorry figure for the Kiwi bowlers, their bowlers were smashed all over the park by the Indian openers, later by MSD and Skipper Kohli.
Ish Sodi was the picked of the bowlers. He dismissed 2 Indian batsmen. Sodi ended his spell by picking up 2 wickets for just 25 runs from his 4 overs.
Boult was another Kiwi bowler who picked a wicket. Boult could pick up only one wicket, he conceded 49 runs from his 4 overs.
Rest of them were very expensive, New Zealand also conceded 9 extras which also hurt them.
Chasing 203 to win, New Zealand didn’t start off well. Martin Guptill continued his poor form on this tour. He was dismissed due to a great catch at the boundary by Hardik Pandya. Chahal was the bowler who picked up Guptill’s wicket for just 4.
After 2.1 overs, Bhuvneshwar Kumar clean bowled Colin Munro for just 7 runs.
The Black Caps were in deep trouble, senior players like Tom Latham and Skipper Kane Williamson started to rebuild their innings with a small partnership.
This small partnership of 34 runs was finally ended by Hardik Pandya. He dismissed New Zealand’s captain for 28 runs.
Tom Latham was still there, with him the New Zealand’s hope too. Latham wanted to replicate the innings he played in Mumbai. But he needed someone to stay.
Wickets of Tom Bruce, Colin De Grandhomme and Henry Nicholls gave New Zealand a big setback.
After some over Latham too perished for 39 runs. Chahal was the bowler again. He was stumped by the world’s best keeper MS Dhoni.
Tim Southee was picked by Jasprit Bumrah for 8 runs.
New Zealand ended their innings on 149 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodi were unbeaten on 27 and 11 runs respectively.
Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal picked up 2 wickets. Bhuvi, Bumrah and Hardik Pandya picked up 1 wicket each.
Ashish Nehra was unfortunate not to pick up any wickets. But it was a fitting farewell for Nehraji. He ends his career on a winning note.
India won the match by 53 runs. This win is India’s first T20 win against New Zealand.
Shikhar Dhawan was the man of the match for scoring his career-best 80 runs.
Next game is at Saurashtra Cricket Stadium in Rajkot on Saturday 04 November 2017.
