#Shane #Watson and #Sam #Billings good cameos overshadows #Andree #Russell’s thunder storm in Chepauk.
After two years the Chennai Super Kings came to play an IPL game at the MA Chindambaram Stadium in Chepauk and they didn’t disappoint their home crowd when they won against KKR yesterday.
It was a fighting win for CSK; they have the batters to chase down any total. Just like their win over MI few days ago, this win will mean a lot to the men in yellow.
This win came largely because of Shane Watson and Sam Billings, Watson came good as an opener and Billings played his finishing role to perfection.
This time they didn’t need Bravo as they needed him in the opening match of the IPL 2018.
CSK won the toss and opted to bat first in this 5th match of the IPL.
This decision didn’t go to well for MS Dhoni as the first over of the innings was too expensive for the home team.
Deepak Chachar gave away 18 runs in the opening over, Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn the two KKR openers were on the attack straight away.
Then India’s most experienced bowler was called to bowl the next over of the innings and he didn’t disappoint his captain.
Harbhajan Singh delivers for CSK; he gave them an important breakthrough. On his 2nd ball Bhajji came around the wicket and bowled a tossed up delivery which Narine looked to slog it over mid wicket. Suresh Raina was there to take a sharp running catch, he tumbles on the ground but the ball was safe in his hands. Narine departs after scoring 12 runs.
Then comes Robin Uthappa, he and Lynn continued to attack the CSK bowlers despite the pitch at the Cheapuk offered some turn.
Uthappa and Lynn played some fearless shots against the spinners. They were looking dangerous, in this process Robin Uthappa also completed his 500 runs against CSK in IPL cricket.
CSK were in search of a break through, they recalled Ravindra Jadeja to the attack and this ploy worked, Jaddu gave CSK an important breakthrough.
Jaddu picked the important wicket of dangerous Chris Lynn; Lynn gets clean bowled by the trajectory of the slower ball bowled by Jadeja. Chris Lynn was out after scoring 22 runs.
The man of the moment Nitish Rana came to bat with Uthappa as KKR were looking to stabilize the innings with a partnership.
Uthappa was going on well at the other end and Rana was also playing a good hand.
KKR needed this partnership to go on but Watson takes the important wicket of Nitish Rana. Nitish moved across the short delivery to help it along its way but gets a faint edge which went straight to Dhoni behind the stumps. Rana goes after scoring 16 runs.
After the time out, KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik came to bat with Uthappa.
But KKR gets a huge blow right after the time out; Uthppa goes after scoring 29 runs. He gifted his wicket away, the misunderstanding between Karthik and Uthappa caused his unfortunate run out. Suresh Raina was the one who made this special effort in the field because of him Uthappa went for 29 runs.
KKR had lost some momentum as Rinku Singh came in to support DK at the crease as KKR batsmen looked to consolidate the innings.
But Rinku Singh went cheaply to make the condition worse for KKR; Rinku goes for a hard drive on a full ball that took the bottom part of the bat, in the end he ended up slicing it to DJ Bravo who was standing there at the backward point region. Rinku Singh was out for 2 runs.
KKR were in trouble because of those wicket which came in regular intervals.
Andree Russel came in to bat with skipper Dinesh Karthik, as the duo looked to repair the innings and get some quick runs in the final few overs.
Both the batsmen started off carefully, when they were set they took on the CSK bowlers with ease.
Russell and Karthik were on song because the CSK bowlers were leaking runs in the later part of the innings.
KKR made a good come back in this match. In this process Russell reached his fifty in this match.
Dhoni and CSK tried everything to get Andre Russell out but they got the wicket of Dinesh Karthik who also played well.
Watson came back into the attack and gave a blow to KKR in the 17th over. Watto bowled a Yorker delivery which was missed by Karthik, he was caught plumb in front. His handy innings of 25 runs came to an end.
Tom Curran came in to join Russell, it was Russell who took the maximum strike and made a good impact towards the end.
Chennai bowlers leaked runs, as Russell banged them took them apart.
He single handedly took the total above 200 runs, at one point it didn’t looked possible.
His 88 unbeaten runs gave KKR the score of 202 runs in their allotted 20 overs. These 202 runs are the highest score after being 5 down.
The CSK bowlers started off well but couldn’t end well, for them Shane Watson picked up 2 wickets with him. Harbhajan Singh, Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja picked up 1 wicket each.
The chase of 203 runs was a great one for CSK, even though they lost wickets but they held their nerves till the end.
The openers, Watson and Rayudu gave them the much needed start of 75 runs because of the KKR bowlers didn’t bowl in the first six overs.
They needed a break through in form of Shane Watson. He was the first one to go for 42 runs. Tom Curran took his wicket and this was his maiden wicket in the IPL.
It was a short of a length delivery which Watto tried to pull it hard but it went straight to the fielder Rinku Singh. Watson goes after scoring valuable 42 runs.
After few overs and 10 runs, Ambati Rayudu also perishes to Kuldeep Yadav. The ball outside the off stump spun away but Rayudu goes short the chip and hits it to the substitute fielder Shivam Mavill. Rayudu departs after scoring 39 runs.
Suresh Raina and skipper MS Dhoni came when CSK needed boundary every over, which a tough ask because they were the new batsmen at the crease.
Narine and Kuldeep were not allowing Dhoni and Raina to get that required boundary. Raina was also found struggling at the other end with cramps.
After 34 balls Raina breaks the shackles, he hits Kuldeep a great six, that’s what was needed for CSK.
They needed Raina to continue that but Narine took the wicket of Raina. The short delivery by Narine which Raina picked up early and gets a top edge, went to Vinay Kumar who took a running catch. Raina goes after scoring 14 runs.
After Raina’s dismissal Sam Billings came out to bat with Dhoni who was still struggling at the other end.
Billings took on the charge as these two were trying to put on a partnership.
After the time out, CSK loses struggling Dhoni to Piyush Chawla, a slower delivery from Chawla which he kept it outside off, Dhoni played a sweep short too early and got a under edge to Dinesh Karthik behind the stumps. Dhoni was out after scoring 28 runs.
Sam Billings was still there, he was in good nick. Ravindra Jadeja joined him at the crease and these two took CSK closer to the total.
In this process Sam Billings brought the 3rd fastest 50 for CSK. He reached his 50 runs in just 21 balls.
KKR were in search of another break through, which came but it was too late for them.
Sam Billings was out after playing so well, Tom Curran gets his countrymen. Billings only managed to get a toe end on a full delivery, Robin Uthappa takes a catch diving on his left. Billings good innings ended on 56 runs.
Then DJ Bravo and Jadeja finish the innings on a high.
In the last over Vinay Kumar also helped CSK to pull this one off.
Bravo and Jadeja were unbeaten on 11 runs as CSK won the match by 5 wickets and continued being unbeaten in this IPL season.
KKR bowlers didn’t have a great day, they struggled to make an impact. For them Tom Curran took 2 wickets with Sunil Narnie, Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav took 1 wicket each.
Sam billings was awarded the man of the match for his useful 56 runs.
