Strike Near Bushehr Nuclear Plant, WHO and IAEA Raise Serious Alarm

The conflict between Iran and America has reached a dangerous turning point. A strike near Iran’s only operational nuclear power plant at Bushehr has sent alarm bells ringing across the world. A security staff member at the plant was killed after being hit by falling debris. However, the International Atomic Energy Agency said radiation levels showed no increase.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that an attack on a nuclear facility could trigger a health catastrophe devastating generations. He said that with each passing day of the escalating conflict, the risk only grows larger.

IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi expressed deep concern and said nuclear plants must not be targeted. He urged all parties to adhere to the seven pillars of nuclear safety — physical integrity, equipment functionality, staff safety, power supply, logistics, radiation monitoring, and communication — to prevent a radioactive disaster.

Bushehr city is home to 2.5 lakh people and is one of Iran’s most critical industrial and military centres. This was the fourth such incident near the plant in recent weeks, deepening the international community’s anxiety over the safety of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure amid an intensifying conflict.
