Former UK finance minister Rishi Sunak has become Britain’s next prime minister after Penny Mordont withdrew from the race for leadership. As soon as Sir Graham Brady announced that he had received only one nomination for the new leader of the party, Conservative Party MPs welcomed it by thumping the tables. He then announced that Rishi Sunak would be the next leader of the party.

Priti Patel, considered a supporter of former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, on Monday supported Rishi Sunak as the leader of the Conservative Party for the post of Prime Minister. Patel backed Sunak after Johnson withdrew from the race for the prime minister’s post. Patel, a former home minister of Indian origin, resigned from the cabinet last month after Liz Truss was elected the country’s new prime minister.
