13 dead, 2,000 affected in Vizag gas leak tragedy

A major gas leak at the LG Polymers chemical plant in Visakhapatnam has left thirteen people dead, including a child. Hundreds of villagers were rushed to nearby hospitals in Visakhapatnam with complaints of headache, vomiting and breathing problems.

The Visakhapatnam gas leak took place at LG Polymers chemical plant around 2.30 am on Thursday. The death toll has now gone up to eight and the evacuation process is still on in the nearby areas.

A six-year-old is among the eight people who have lost their lives after inhaling poisonous gas leaked from LG Polymers plant at RR Venkatapuram, Gopalapatnam, Visakhapatnam, early on Thursday. More than a hundred were taken ill and being treated at King George and a government hospital in Gopalapatnam.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was personally monitoring the situation and called for a high-level emergency meeting. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was to reach Visakhapatnam to see and rescue work in the Vizag gas leak tragedy.
