India has logged 78,64,811 coronavirus cases so far with 50,129 new infections. 578 deaths in the last 24 hours have pushed the total death count to 1,18,534. 62,077 patients have recovered from the infection in the country in the last 24 hours.

With 70,78,123 people in the country having recovered since the beginning of the pandemic, the overall recovery rate is 89.9 per cent. India is the second worst-hit country in the world by the pandemic after the United States. The country reported its first case on January 30.

The number of coronavirus cases has seen a daily dip with October 25 reporting 50,129 cases in comparison to 55,772 a week ago.

About 61 per cent of the total recovered cases from COVID-19 are from six states and UTs of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, the Union health ministry said on Saturday.

Maharashtra, India’s worst COVID-19-affected state, added 6,417 new cases, with the total number of infected people reaching 16,38, 961. The state also reported 137 deaths, which took the fatality count to 43,152.

The national capital on Saturday recorded 4,116 fresh COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day spike in 35 days, while the death count from the disease mounted to 6,225, according to a Delhi government. This is the second consecutive day when over 4,000 cases were recorded in the city.

The coronavirus vaccine – when one is finally ready – should be available to all Indians for free, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said Saturday, amid continuing controversy over the ruling BJP listing free Covid vaccines in its manifesto for next week’s Bihar election.

The Mizoram government has decided to shut all schools that were reopened for students of classes 10 and 12 due to the rising number of locally transmitted COVID-19 cases.

The world is now at a critical juncture in the COVID-19 pandemic and some countries are on a dangerous path, facing the prospect of health services collapsing under the strain, the head of the World Health Organization said on Friday.

Two major clinical trials for experimental Covid-19 vaccines got back on track in the United States Friday — providing a glimmer of hope as the number of cases skyrocket across the country.

The global figure now stands at over 4.12 crore cases and over 11.3 lakh deaths, according to WHO.

The US remains the country hit hardest by far by the health crisis gripping the world, with over 2.23 lakh deaths.
