A BJP worker was beaten to death and six others were wounded when a group of people assaulted them during a door-to-door campaign in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Saturday, the police said.

Saikat Bhawal had been beaten to death. As he was admitted to the hospital, the doctors said he was “brought dead” the police said, adding that the matter was being investigated.

Six others who were also wounded during the attack, were taken to the hospital. Arjun Singh reported that goons, sheltered by the Trinamool Congress, killed Saikat Bhawal, but the ruling party refuted the charge.

Arjun Singh said the party would launch a demonstration in the district against the incident on Sunday.

The BJP said the party members were targeted when they were engaging in the “Griha Sampark Abhiyan”, a public outreach initiative, part of BJP’s “Aar Noi Annay” (No More Injustice) movement, launched in the run-up to the April-May elections to the State Assembly next year.
