The Prime Minister of Moldova, Ion Chicu, resigns, opening the way for early parliamentary elections.
Chicu declared his decision at a press conference on Wednesday shortly before formally submitting his resignation, along with outgoing President Igor Dodon and Parliament Speaker Zinaida Greceanai, Xinhua news agency reported.

He added that on the day he will have a meeting with President-elect Maia Sandu to resolve the work of the administration. The Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) former chief Sandu is due to take office on Thursday.
Greceanai reported that there would no longer be a legislative meeting planned for the day to discuss a motion of censure against the government.
The motion against the government of Chicu was tabled last Wednesday by 34 members of the three groups, headed by the PAS, who blamed the government for failing to alleviate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis. Local observers conclude that the new minority government is likely to fail in the vote of confidence.
According to the Constitution, if two cabinet formations fail following the resignation of the new administration, the President has the power to dissolve the parliament and to announce an early election.
