During his first visit to Sri Lanka in 2021, Minister of Foreign Affairs of India Dr. S. Jaishankar made a clear case for Tamil reconciliation

His visit was for strengthening bilateral talks between India and Sri Lanka. Jaishankar spoke of the “longstanding” support for the reconciliation process and “inclusive” political outlook that encourages “ethnic harmony”

Gunawardena, in his statement, said the President had “firmly stated” his commitment to the well-being, progress and opportunity “to all our citizens — Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and all”.
The Sri Lankan counterpart described earlier the broad areas of their bilateral talks, including cooperation during the pandemic, trade and investment, maritime and fisheries.

On the question of fishermen, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of India hoped that Indian fishermen would soon be sent home. He said, “As regards fisheries problems, you will be aware that the India-Sri Lanka Joint Working Group on this topic has recently met where all outstanding issues have been addressed in a transparent and candid manner. We naturally look forward to the early return of our fishermen.

On the Covid vaccine front, Jaishankar said, “We’re looking at post-Covid cooperation now, and I’m back with Sri Lanka’s interest in accessing vaccines from India, and I’ve shared with the Hon’ble Foreign Minister, as Prime Minister Modi said, India sees international cooperation in this area as its duty.”

“We are thankful for the tremendous assistance India has provided over the past few months to alleviate the negative effects of the Covid pandemic. India’s first neighbourhood strategy has had a very positive effect during this crucial time of unparalleled crisis.”said the Sri Lankan leader.

Pleased to call on President @GotabayaR. Conveyed warm greetings from PM @narendramodi. Discussed cooperation for post-Covid health and economic recovery. India will be a reliable partner in Sri Lanka's development. pic.twitter.com/eaehNafiuN
