People began registering as the registration process began on the first day of COVID-19 vaccinations began at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

More than 1.32 crore citizens of our country registered for Covid-19 vaccination on Wednesday, when the government’s portal, CoWIN, opened for registration for all citizens over the age of 18. On the first day, the government reported that 1,32,67,272 people registered for vaccinations.

On Wednesday, just minutes after registration began at 4 p.m., the portal crashed. The Aarogya Setu App also experienced glitches. Both platforms were later restored, allowing those who were eligible to register for the life-saving vaccine.

As registrations opened at 4 p.m., people began to complain about being unable to load the CoWIN website or not receiving OTPs to log in to the platform. On January 16, this year, India launched a nationwide immunization campaign. To date, more than 14 crore doses of the two Covid-19 vaccines approved for emergency use – Covaxin and Covishield – have been administered throughout the country. A number of states have made vaccinations free of charge for people between the ages of 18 and 45.

In the first phase, healthcare and frontline workers were immunized, with the central government footing the bill for the potentially life-saving shots. Vaccinations were opened for those aged 45 and up in the second phase.
