In Sri Lanka, Chief Government Whip Johnson Fernando informed parliament today that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will not resign under any circumstances. This information comes after the demand of the public and political opponents for Gotabaya Rajapaksa to step down amid the country’s economic crisis.
People have been protesting for several weeks in Sri Lanka over power cuts and lack of gas, food and other basic goods. In view of the public anger and these demonstrations, all cabinet ministers and many MPs have resigned from the Rajapaksa government.
Opposition MPs have also rejected Gotabaya’s proposal to form a national unity government.
