A protester was killed and several injured in police firing in Sri Lanka yesterday. People were protesting against rising inflation, shortage of essential commodities and prolonged power cuts.
The police had to open fire in an attempt to clear people from the important railway line. The condition of two protesters is said to be critical. Sri Lanka has sought financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund to deal with the most severe economic crisis. There has been a crisis of fuel, electricity, food items and medicines in the country for the last several weeks.
Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since independence from Britain in 1948. There is a severe shortage of foreign exchange in the country, due to which it is unable to pay for the import of food items and fuel. People are continuously protesting on the streets regarding the economic crisis.
