A court in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo has banned former prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and several of his key aides from leaving the country. According to media reports, these include Rajapaksa’s son and former minister Namal Rajapaksa, Johnson Fernando, Pavitra Vanniarachi, CB Ratnayake, Sanath Nishant, Sanjeeva Adirmane and many others.
Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from the post of Prime Minister on Monday amid weeks of anti-government protests and economic crisis in the country.
In the capital Colombo, a magistrate asked police to investigate Monday’s mob attacks on peaceful protesters, which led to retaliatory violence that killed nine people and caused widespread destruction.
