DGCA has imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on Air India. The penalty has been imposed by the regulator in the case of Air India not allowing passengers holding valid tickets to travel and then refusing to pay mandatory compensation.

The regulator said in a statement on Tuesday, “Such cases have been investigated by DGCA in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Delhi. During this, the fact came to the fore that Air India did not comply with the regulations. Thereafter a show cause notice was issued to the airline by the DGCA and a personal hearing was also conducted in this regard.

According to the DGCA, Air India probably has no policy of its own in this regard and does not pay compensation to passengers.

Ultimately this is a matter of serious concern and is unacceptable, the regulator said.

The regulator said that following the response of Air India in this matter, the competent authority has imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on the airline. The airline has also been advised to put in place an immediate mechanism to resolve the issue.
