The Delhi government has decided to withdraw the new excise policy for the time being and has directed the sale of liquor through government-run shops. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia gave this information on Saturday. 468 private liquor shops operating in the city will be closed from August 1 after the period of their license and the new excise policy expires on July 31.
Sisodia also alleged that the BJP was using agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to intimidate the licensees and excise officials of liquor shops. He said that many licensees have now closed their shops and the excise officials were scared to start open auction of retail licences.
“They want to create a shortage of liquor so that they can do illegal business of liquor in Delhi, as they are doing in Gujarat, but we will not let that happen,” Sisodia said.
He claimed that if the legal sale of liquor is stopped in Delhi, there could be a ‘poisonous liquor tragedy’ like in Gujarat.
Sisodia said, “Under the old system, the government used to get a revenue of Rs 6,000 crore, whereas through the new excise policy, the government had set a target of earning Rs 9,500 crore in the entire year.”
Accusing the BJP of intimidating licensees and excise officials through the CBI and the ED, Sisodia claimed that out of 850 liquor shops, only 468 could open as several shops were closed following “threats from the BJP”. went.
