Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the importance of India-Maldives relations at an official banquet hosted by Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu. Describing the two countries as partners of the Global South, he said that India has been a true partner in Maldives’ development journey.

The Prime Minister noted that it was an honour to be invited as the Chief Guest on the 60th Independence Day of Maldives. This year also marks the 60th anniversary of India-Maldives relations, giving this visit special significance.

He said, “Our relations are centuries old. We are not just neighbours or partners, but friends who stand with us in times of need. Maldives holds a special place in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.”

In his address, President Muizzu congratulated Prime Minister Modi on becoming the second longest-serving Prime Minister of India. He said that his tenure of 4,078 days is a testimony to his commitment to public service.

The visit coincides with Maldives’ Independence Day celebrations, where Prime Minister Modi is the chief guest. The occasion commemorates India’s prompt recognition of Maldives’ independence in 1965.

This diplomatic meeting is being considered an opportunity to redefine bilateral relations and strengthen mutual interests in the Indian Ocean region. The Prime Minister’s presence symbolizes India’s continued support for regional stability, maritime cooperation and cultural dialogue.
