After the 8.7 magnitude earthquake in Russia’s Kamchatka region on Wednesday, there is a threat of tsunami in various areas of the Pacific Ocean. In view of this situation, the Indian Consulate General in San Francisco has issued a security advisory for Indian citizens residing in California, Hawaii and other western coastal areas of the US.
The embassy circulated a message on social media saying, “We are monitoring the potential tsunami threat following the 8.7 magnitude earthquake in Russia. Indian citizens living in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant.” The embassy has urged citizens to follow the instructions of the local administration and emergency management agencies. Helpline number +1-415-483-6629 has been issued for emergencies.
In Japan too, the government is on full alert. The Prime Minister’s Office has issued instructions that tsunami-related information be disseminated timely and the safety of citizens be ensured. Japan’s Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for the eastern Pacific coast of Hokkaido and other coastal areas.
Emergency services in Russia and surrounding countries are on high alert. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and trust only official information.
Alertness has been increased across the Pacific region and emergency teams are constantly monitoring the situation. All concerned countries have strengthened mutual coordination to deal with any emergency.
