The US on Wednesday decided to impose an additional 25 percent tariff on products imported from India. India has reacted strongly to this move. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the decision as “unfortunate, unfair and unreasonable” and made it clear that India will take all necessary measures to protect its national interests.
The spokesperson also clarified that India’s import of oil from Russia is purely for the purpose of meeting market requirements and ensuring energy security of 1.4 billion Indians. He said, “The US has decided to impose additional duties on India for activities that many other countries are also doing in accordance with their national interests.”
According to this order issued by US President Donald Trump, an additional 25 percent duty will be imposed on goods imported from India, which will come into effect 21 days after the order is issued. According to the White House, this decision has been taken to increase pressure on Russia and make the sanctions imposed due to the Ukraine conflict more effective. America alleges that India is directly or indirectly purchasing oil from Russia, which is posing a threat to its national security and foreign policy.
This additional duty will be in addition to any other duty already in effect, unless the goods are exempt under specific categories or prior trade agreements. The decision is likely to increase tensions in trade relations between the two countries.
India has reiterated that it is ready for positive dialogue with the US, but will not compromise on its economic and strategic interests.
