India is rapidly emerging as a global cybersecurity hub . Dr. Sanjay Bahl, Director General of the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) , stated that the country has more than 400 startups and over 650,000 skilled professionals active in the cybersecurity field. This workforce is powering the nearly $20 billion cybersecurity industry .
Dr. Bahl said that Indian startups are innovating in the areas of threat detection, cyber forensics, and AI-based monitoring systems . These efforts further strengthen India’s commitment to building a robust and secure digital ecosystem . He made these remarks during an interactive session organized by the Ministry of External Affairs, CERT-In, and the Ministry of Electronics and IT for journalists from the European Union .
Chairing the event, Dr. Bahl said that artificial intelligence (AI) is a double-edged sword —it provides new capabilities to both security defenders and cybercriminals. He explained that CERT-In is using AI-based analysis and automation techniques to detect, prevent, and respond to cyber incidents in real time.
Dr. Bahl revealed that 147 ransomware incidents were reported in India in 2024. CERT-In’s response to these incidents significantly mitigated the damage through real-time intelligence sharing, forensic intervention, and coordinated action . He said this demonstrates the efficiency and urgency of India’s cyber response system.
During the session, experts discussed the role of CERT-In in cyber incident management, risk assessment, and coordinated response mechanisms . Dr. Bahl stated that the organization’s objective is to ensure “security through awareness, not fear.”
He also informed that CERT-In periodically issues warnings and advisories to institutions and citizens about new threats and vulnerabilities , so as to keep the digital borders of the country safe.
Dr. Bahl also stressed that India’s aim is not only to strengthen security but also to achieve global leadership in the field of cyber security .
