The United States military has struck a major highway bridge in Iran, further escalating tensions between the two countries. The attack targeted the B1 Bridge, which connects Tehran to the nearby city of Karaj. According to a US military official, the bridge served as a key supply route for Iran’s missile and drone forces, which is why it was targeted.
At least eight people were killed and several others injured in the strike, including civilians who were out during the Nowruz celebrations. Iran’s state media claimed the bridge was not operational and was not being used by the military. President Trump took to social media to praise the strike, writing, ‘Iran’s biggest bridge has been taken down, it will never be used again. There is a lot more to come!’ He also warned Iran to make a deal before it is too late.
Iranian leaders responded sharply. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf said that when it comes to defending the country, every citizen will become a soldier. Tehran has for now refused talks, with a foreign ministry spokesperson stating that negotiations are not possible under current circumstances.
The strike came alongside attacks on other locations. Iranian officials said the Pasteur Institute of Iran, a major public health centre, was also targeted in an airstrike. Israel intercepted missiles fired from Iran, while Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched missiles towards Israel. At the United Nations Security Council, Russia, China and France blocked a proposal to allow the use of force to reopen the Hormuz Strait.
