Following the crushing defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, a major constitutional and political upheaval has erupted within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). A serious and sensational case of forged signatures by MLAs has surfaced during the process of electing the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly. With the heat of this “Signgate” scandal reaching Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, the TMC immediately expelled (suspended) two of its own MLAs—Ritabrata Banerjee (Uluberia East) and Sandipan Saha (Entally)—from the party to control the damage and quell the rebellion. This hasty action, taken just 15 minutes after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered a CID investigation into the entire scandal and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT), clearly demonstrates the deep fear and panic within the party.
The roots of this entire fraudulent scandal lie in a proposal sent to the Assembly Secretariat, which claimed the support of 70 MLAs to appoint Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of the Opposition. When the signatures on this letter were verified, several MLAs, including Chowringhee MLA Naina Banerjee and Canning East MLA Baharul Islam, were found to be completely forged. Following this, rebel TMC MLAs, Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, courageously filed a complaint directly with the Assembly Speaker, claiming that no such meeting had taken place on May 6th and that the document submitted by Abhishek Banerjee was completely forged and fabricated. Following the registration of an FIR at the Hare Street police station on the Speaker’s instructions, the CID began investigating, and three MLAs openly stated that their signatures were not on the letter.
Nationalist thinkers and political experts say that even after losing the election, the TMC is not giving up its old habits of “stealing and boasting.” This scandal has proven that the dictatorial control of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee within the Trinamool Congress has now completely collapsed, as 61 out of 80 MLAs were absent from the TMC legislature party meeting convened two days ago. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s strong anti-corruption campaign has put the entire Mamata Banerjee brigade on the back foot. The leftist and secular media were trying to hide this internal rift, but by opening a front against their own leadership, TMC MLAs have made it clear that the end of appeasement and corruption in Bengal is near, and the law will take its course with full force.
