A militant who was killed in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district along side a top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) commander was identified as a Pakistani ultra, police on Thursday said. India has recorded more than 12 lakh fresh Covid-19 cases in August, higher than in any previous month and the highest count by any country during this month. The milestone came on a day when the country reported more than 69,000 fresh infections, the second highest single-day tally so far, and 986 deaths. The Supreme Court has rejected a PIL filed by an Ayurveda practitioner claiming that he has found a cure for Covid-19 and that this cure should be used by the government across the country. The Supreme Court Thursday granted two days to activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who has been held guilty of contempt, to reconsider his ‘defiant statement’ refusing to apologise for his contemptuous tweets against the judiciary.
