Union Home Minister Amit Shah had lunch at a farmer’s house in West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district on Saturday as part of his exercise to improve ties with farmers in the run-up to the state elections.
Shah’s decision assumes importance in the wake of continuing farmers’ demonstrations against the three farm laws in Delhi. S
The Home Minister who is on a two-day visit to West Bengal to take stock of the BJP’s affairs in the state, arrived here on Saturday and offered puja at a local temple.
The union minister went to the Sanatan Singh residence in Balijhuri and had lunch there. Shah was joined by BJP National Secretary General Kailash Vijayvargiya, BJP National Vice-President Mukul Roy and State Party Head Dilip Ghosh.
It was a vegetarian dish of Bengali delicacies, served on a banana leaf. Shah and the other visitors, who stood on the verandah floor of the two-storey building with a tin roof, had ‘saak bhaja,’ ‘lou daal,’ ‘shukto,’ ‘phulkopi tarkari’ (cauliflower curry), ‘posto’ (potato fried in poppy seed paste) and ‘tok doi.’
Tight security arrangements have been made and representatives of the media and other party leaders have been held outside the building, and Shah’s security forces have repeatedly searched the premises.
During his visit to the state in November, he had lunch at the home of a tribal BJP worker in Bankura and the house of a ‘matua’ group member in North 24 Parganas.
