Break Dance will make its entry into 2024 Paris Olympics. In June 2019, the Organising Committee has provisionally attached skateboarding, sport climbing and sailing to the 2024 programme. Breaking and sport climbing first featured as medal events at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, while skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing were previously accepted for their Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games.
In February 2019, the organisers first suggested the inclusion of a break as a new Olympic event in Paris. Tony Estanguet, a former Olympic champion and president of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee, said at the time that modern sports would make the Games “more urban” and more artistic.”
The definitive decision to add a break to the 2024 Games was not to be taken until after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Despite the postponement of the Summer Games in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Committee continued with its scheduled meeting.
Breakdancing started in the 1970s in the Bronx as a part of hip-hop culture and eventually spread worldwide. At the 2018 Youth Olympics, dancers between the ages of 16-18 competed head-to-head in either men’s, women’s or mixed-team battles. The breakers were judged on six criteria: personality, technique, variety, creativity, performativity and musicality.
