Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud is retiring on November 10, 2024. However, his last working day in the Supreme Court was on November 8th. On his last day, he heard 45 cases. On his final working day on Friday, the ceremonial bench sat in the Supreme Court as per tradition. This ceremonial bench, chaired by the Chief Justice, has the current and the next Chief Justice sitting together to hear certain matters.

Before this ceremonial bench, Attorney General R. Venkataramani said that he has a lot to say, but suddenly realizes that something is missing. He said that after a recent conference in Brazil, everyone started dancing. If he asks everyone to dance on the occasion of the Chief Justice’s retirement, most people would support him.

On this occasion, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, addressing the Chief Justice, said that his departure is saddening for them. Mehta said that the Chief Justice has proven himself to be a great son of a great father. He said that the Chief Justice’s two sons will never know what they have achieved and what we have lost. He said that the government has won many cases, but in some cases, they were not successful, but they are satisfied that the Chief Justice has patiently heard their entire arguments.

On this occasion, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, in a lighter vein, said that the Chief Justice is quite fond of samosas. He said that many judges around the world like the Chief Justice because of his looks.
