According to the Irrigation Department, about 3,29,313 cusecs of water was released from Hathinikund Barrage on Tuesday morning. This water is expected to reach Delhi, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar in the next 24-30 hours. Officials estimate that the water level of Yamuna may rise much above normal by the evening of 2 September.
The administration has urged the citizens living in flood-affected areas to immediately move to safer places. Especially the families living on the river banks and low-lying areas may face greater risk. The administration’s aim is to ensure protection from loss of life, property and animals.
Ghaziabad and Delhi administration have started necessary preparations for flood management. District administration teams are running awareness campaigns in rural areas. Relief and rescue teams have been put on alert mode. In case of rapid rise in water level, the affected people will be rehabilitated immediately.
In view of the rising water level, Shahdara District Magistrate has issued instructions to suspend operations on the Old Railway Bridge (Iron Bridge). The Railway Authority has decided to stop rail traffic on the bridge from 5 pm on Tuesday. For the convenience of passengers, trains will be operated through alternative routes. Regular information will be broadcast at New Delhi and Old Delhi stations.
Every year during the monsoon season, the water level of Yamuna creates a crisis for the lower areas of Delhi-NCR. In the present circumstances, all the concerned agencies are taking necessary action while maintaining vigilance.
