Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday formally inaugurated the old Carnac Bridge in Mumbai by renaming it as ‘Sindoor Bridge’. Addressing the media after the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Minister said that the old Carnac Bridge was in a dilapidated condition, due to which it was demolished and a new bridge was constructed.
Fadnavis, while highlighting the reasons behind the renaming, clarified that this decision is part of the national policy to erase the symbols related to British colonial history. He said that Carnac was a British governor who had persecuted Indians, especially Pratap Singh Raje of Satara and Uddhav Raje of Nagpur, and tried to implicate them in conspiracies.
The selection of the name ‘Sindoor’ is based on the importance of ‘Operation Sindoor’, under which India had successfully attacked terrorist bases in Pakistan. Quoting the views of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister said that in the Amrit Kaal of Independence, it is necessary to give priority to names associated with national pride by removing colonial symbols.
The bridge connects the eastern and western areas of South Mumbai and was earlier named after James Rivett Carnac, who served as the Governor of Bombay Province from 1839 to 1841. This renaming initiative reflects national pride and respect for historical memories.
