At least four people were arrested on Wednesday for attacking a police officer and setting a police vehicle on fire during a BJP rally in Bengal’s Kolkata. During the BJP’s ‘Nabanna March’ yesterday, Assistant Commissioner of Police Debjit Chattopadhyay in Baobazar was chased away and attacked by some people with sticks.
A police vehicle was also torched near the Kolkata Police Headquarters in Lalbazar. A Kolkata Police official said on Wednesday that the raids are still going on. He said four accused were identified on the basis of video clips of the two incidents.
According to the official, a case has been registered against him on charges of attempt to murder, destruction of government property and preventing a government servant from performing duty.
BJP national vice president Dilip Ghosh alleged that the attack was carried out by Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters who had entered the rally. “Our workers are being framed and false allegations are being made against them,” he alleged.
