The Supreme Court on Wednesday began hearing petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud will hear the matter every day from Wednesday.
Monday and Friday are the days of hearing of miscellaneous matters in the apex court. On these days only fresh petitions are taken up, regular matters are not taken up. The Supreme Court had earlier said that the affidavit filed by the Center regarding the status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir after the August 5, 2019 notification would have no bearing on the constitutional issue being heard by a five-judge constitution bench. .
The Center had on August 5, 2019 abolished the special status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated it into two Union Territories (Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh).
