In a first, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has appointed a woman officer as the chief of its Srinagar sector. IPS officer Charu Sinha has been appointed as an Inspector General (IG) and will be heading the CRPF’s Srinagar sector, which is one of the most-sensitive sectors that the force operates in.

Charu Sinha is a 1996-batch IPS officer of the Telangana cadre. However, this is not the first time that she will be serving in a sensitive area. In the past, Charu Sinha has served as IG of CRPF’s Bihar sector in Naxal-affected areas.

“Under her leadership, various anti-Naxals operations were carried out. Later, she was transferred to IG Jammu in CRPF where she spent a long and successful tenure. On Monday, a fresh order came appointing her as the IG Srinagar sector,” news agency ANI said in a report.

The Srinagar sector of the CRPF came into being in 205 and no IG-rank woman officer has served there so far. The Srinagar sector is actively involved in anti-terror operations and works closely with the Indian Army and the J&K Police.

“Srinagar sector is located at Brein Nishat, Srinagar (J&K). It started functioning in 2005. Srinagar Sector has operational jurisdiction over three districts of J&K — Budgam, Ganderbal, and Srinagar — and Union Territory of Ladakh,” the CRPF was quoted as saying by ANI.

The Srinagar sector includes two ranges, 22 executive units, and three Mahila companies.

As the chief of this sector, Charu Sinha will be heading all CRPF operations.
