Nepal has witnessed a major political development within hours of the swearing-in of new Prime Minister Balendra Shah . Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has been arrested in connection with the Zen-G movement. Former Home Minister Ramesh Lekharhas also been detained.

Current Home Minister Sudan Gurung confirmed the arrest through social media, saying that no one is above the law and this action is not revenge but the beginning of justice.

In fact, the Gen-G movement, which began in September 2025 against corruption and unemployment, turned violent, resulting in the deaths of several people. Following an investigation, action has now been taken. According to reports, Oli was arrested from his Gundu residence, and Ramesh Lekhak was arrested from the Kutunje area of Bhaktapur.

According to media reports, this is the first time in Nepal’s history that a former prime minister has been detained on serious charges such as murder. Previously, former prime ministers have been questioned, but not arrested in this manner.

The recent report of the Commission of Inquiry suspected former Prime Minister Oli, former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and other officials of violating Section 182 of the Criminal Code 2017. Action has been taken on this basis.

It is reported that the decision to implement the commission’s report was made at a cabinet meeting held shortly after Prime Minister Balendra Shah was sworn in. Following this, the Home Minister directed the police to proceed with the investigation, and the legal process was expedited.

This development marks a major shift in Nepal’s politics, where a tough stance on accountability and law enforcement has been adopted soon after the change of power.
