Arunachal Pradesh has taken a significant step in the field of medical services. A state-of-the-art drone port has been inaugurated at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), making it the first state in India where medicines will be supplied through drones.
This drone port installed on the roof of the hospital in Naharlagun will enable the delivery of essential medical supplies to remote areas at a fast speed. About 80% of Arunachal Pradesh is mountainous, due to which timely supply of medicines through traditional modes of transport has been a major challenge.
This facility is not limited to medicines only, human organs required for surgery in emergency situations can also be transported through it. Developed by Arunachal Pradesh Space Application Centre (APSAC), this system is expected to bring about a radical change in the health services of the state.
Hospital Director Dr. Moji Jini inaugurated the project in the presence of Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. D. Raina and senior officials of APSAC. Speaking on the occasion, he said the initiative would ensure timely supply of medicines, anti-venom and other critical medical materials in emergency situations.
The facility is capable of operating both vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) and short take-off and landing (STOL) drones. Additionally, the necessary infrastructure for the maintenance of drones has also been set up.
This initiative is an example of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment towards the development of the North-Eastern States during his tenure, which will ensure access to quality healthcare services even in the remote places of the region.
