All cabinet ministers resigned last night in Sri Lanka. Education Minister and Leader of the House Dinesh Gunawardene told reporters that all cabinet ministers submitted their resignations to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. He did not give any reason for such mass resignation.
Political experts say that the ministers have taken this step in view of public outrage over the government’s alleged failure to deal with the economic crisis in the country. This economic crisis has arisen due to depletion of foreign exchange reserves in Sri Lanka. Despite the curfew last evening, widespread protests were held in the capital Colombo.
Agitated people were demanding the resignation of President Gota Baya Rajapaksa. Sri Lankan police fired teargas and water cannons at hundreds of protesting students.
