Idlis named after Prime Minister Narendra Modi are all set to be offered to the public at Tamil Nadu’s Salem.

Named ‘Modi Idlis’, the savoury rice cakes will be modestly priced at Rs 10 per four pieces as part of an initiative that was conceived by BJP propaganda cell state vice president Mahesh, reported PTI.

To publicise the initiative, ‘Modi idli’ posters have been put up in various parts of the city. The posters have the picture of PM Narendra Modi on the left side and of Mahesh on the right. ‘Four idlis for ₹ 10’ is written in the centre.

“Lotus hero Mahesh presents Modi idli. Four idlis for ₹ 10 with sambar, to be introduced soon in Salem. Made with modern kitchen equipment, tasty and healthy,” the posters read.

The plan was to open 22 shops initially to sell the idlis and depending on its success, the number of outlets will be increased, said “Bharath” R Balasubramanian, BJP Tamil Nadu secretary, Media.

Idlis at low prices have been frequently offered at various places in Tamil Nadu this year.

80-Y refuses to hike idli price of Re 1 despite losses80-year-old refuses to hike idli price of Re 1 despite losses amid lockdown, earns praise
In May, a man 48-year-old man from Trichy sold one idli for Re 1 to the locals in a bid to make affordable food available to the people living in Venkatachalapuram village.

Identified as M Palanisamy, the man is the president of Venkatachalapuram panchayat near Pullambadi. Palaniswami admitted that he was inspired by Kamalathal, who sells idlis at the same price in Coimbatore.

Kamalathal is an 80-year-old woman from Tamil Nadu who has been selling idlis for Re 1 for more than two decades now. Back in May, she said she derived happiness by serving food at such a price.

Despite losses and dip in sales during the lockdown, the octogenarian refused to hike the price of idlis.

“I have been doing this for the past 20 years now and don’t know how long this will continue. I don’t have anybody in my family. I am alone. I earn Rs 200 daily. I don’t aim to earn money out of selling idli at this price,” Kamalathal told ANI in May
