Pranab Mukherjee continues on ventilator support, health worsens after brain surgery

Former President Pranab Mukherjee’s health has worsened and he continues to remain on ventilator support at the Army Research and Referral (R&R) Hospital in New Delhi, the hopsital said today. Pranab Mukherjee, 84, was admitted on Monday in a critical condition and underwent a “live-saving brain surgery”. Besides this, he has also tested positive for coronavirus.

The Army R&R Hospital said Pranab Mukherjee has not shown any improvement, his health status has worsened, and that he remains critical.

A multidisciplinary team of doctors is constantly monitoring the health of the former president. Earlier in the day, the Army R&R Hospital said a large blood clot has developed in Pranab Mukherjee’s brain for which he had to undergo a surgery on Monday.

It is learnt that the former President accidentally slipped in his bathroom and fall resulted in blood clotting in his brain.

On Monday, Pranab Mukherjee in a tweet said he had tested positive for Covid-19 and urged people who had come in contact with him in the last week to isolate themselves and get tested for the novel coronavirus.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the Army’s R&R Hospital on Monday and enquired about the former president’s health.

Soon after the news of his hospitalisation, wishes poured in from various quarters for his early recovery and a number of leaders sent their wishes on Twitter. President Ram Nath Kovind also spoke to Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee and enquired about his health on Monday evening.

Meanwhile, people in Pranab Mukherjee’s native village in Birbhum district of West Bengal have organised a three-day special prayers for his speedy recovery.

A powerful orator and scholar, Pranab Mukherjee had been a Congress stalwart before he was elected as India’s 13th President and served from July 2012 to 2017 in the top post.
