An alleged gangrape of a student at a law college in Kolkata has come to light, which happened almost 10 months after the incident at RG Kar Medical College. Police have arrested three accused – Manojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee, two of whom are current students and one a former student.
According to the victim, she was called to the college to discuss Trinamool Chhatra Parishad posts. The main accused Manojit Mishra, who is a member of the TMC Chhatra Parishad, took the victim to the guard room and allegedly gangraped her along with other accused after she rejected his love proposal. It is alleged that the victim was tortured with a hockey stick and threatened. She was also blackmailed by making a video of the incident. The CCTV footage confirms the victim’s statement.
The incident has sparked political tension in the state. The TMC has admitted that the main accused was associated with their student council, and said the culprits must be punished. The BJP has staged protests across the state.
National Women’s Commission member Archana Majumdar has accused the police of not cooperating during the investigation. At the same time, the party has distanced itself from the controversial statement of TMC MLA Madan Mitra.
Senior party leader Kalyan Banerjee has questioned the party’s stand, which has led to a controversy within the party as well. Union ministers have criticised the state government on the law and order issue, while the state government has said that the police are investigating the matter.
