Mamata Banerjee’s most trusted aides and the face of the Bengal Nandigram movement that steered TMC to majority power 10 years ago, Suvendu Adhikari, joined BJP, putting an end to months of speculation.
Suvendu Adhikari, along with a handful of other Trinamool Congress rebels, decided to join BJP in the presence of Party Chief and Union Minister Amit Shah at the Midnapore rally on Saturday. TMC MP Sunil Mondal, nine MLAs, along with five from Mamata Banerjee, joined the BJP on Saturday.
Hitting out at Mamata Banerjee, Suvendu Adhikari said, “Tolabaaj bhaipo hatao (get rid of your extortionist nephew)” in reference to the nephew of Chief Minister and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee.
Head of the BJP, Suvendu Adhikari wrote a long letter to members of the Trinamool Congress, stating that the party neglected the leaders who founded it from scratch and also took it to power.
Suvendu Adhikari addressed the rally and referred to Amit Shah as his “old brother” and recalled how he had known the leader of the BJP for years.
“I was lying sick after catching Covid-19, none of my party members were concerned about me, it was the BJP leaders who asked me about my fitness,” said Suvendu Adhikari at the BJP rally, looking at Amit Shah, Kailash Vijayvargiya and Dilip Ghosh.
