In the context of increasing tension between Thailand and Cambodia, US President Donald Trump held telephonic talks with the top leadership of both countries. He claimed that both countries have agreed for ceasefire and restoration of trade relations with America.
President Trump first contacted Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Vechayachai. On his social media platform ‘Truth’, Trump mentioned that the talks were positive and Thailand wants an immediate ceasefire and peace.
Trump then held talks with Cambodia’s Prime Minister. He claimed that both sides not only agreed to a ceasefire but also wanted to resume trade talks with the US. Trump made it clear that trade deals would only be possible if the conflict ended.
Thailand’s Foreign Ministry said in its official statement that Acting Prime Minister Vechayachai has requested President Trump to inform Cambodia that Thailand agrees to a ceasefire in principle, but expects Cambodia to show sincere intentions. Thailand wants to discuss procedures for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through bilateral talks.
President Trump has expressed his desire to finalise future trade agreements with both countries, which he described as an “honour”, but has put peacekeeping as a mandatory condition for this.
