Jalalabad in Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh has been officially renamed as “Parshurampuri”. The proposal for this name change has been approved by the Union Home Ministry.
The Uttar Pradesh government had sent an application for name change to the Ministry of Home Affairs on 27 June 2025, to which the Government of India has expressed “no objection”. In the letter number SM/28/35/2025, dated 14.08.2025 received from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the spelling of the new name has been proposed in Devanagari and Roman scripts.
The Home Ministry letter directed the Uttar Pradesh government to issue necessary gazette notification incorporating the spelling of the new name “Parshurampuri” in Devanagari (Hindi), Roman (English) and regional languages.
Union Minister of State and Lok Sabha MP from Pilibhit Jitin Prasad has expressed his gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for this decision. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on the social media platform X.
In his message, Mr. Prasad mentioned, “This decision has given a proud moment to the entire Sanatani society.” He expressed his reverence to Lord Parshuram and said that it was only due to his grace that this work could be accomplished.
This name change is another example of the ongoing process of renaming towns in Uttar Pradesh, under which names of places of historical and cultural significance are being changed.
